Enforcement of the EU AI Act: The EU AI Office

On May 21, 2024, the Council of the European Union adopted the AI Act, the world's first comprehensive law regulating artificial intelligence. This regulation sets uniform rules for developing and using AI across all 27 EU member states, making it a cornerstone of Europe's digital strategy.

The AI Act will significantly impact businesses both within Europe and globally. In the next few weeks, it has been explored how this law will be enforced and what companies should expect in the coming years.

This first article in the series focuses on the EU AI Office, which will oversee enforcement at the European level. Established on January 24, 2024, by the European Commission, even before the AI Act was officially adopted, the EU AI Office will be the EU's central hub for AI expertise.

The EU AI Office will be responsible for key tasks such as regulating general-purpose AI models (GPAI models) and overseeing AI systems developed from these models by the same provider. It will also play a crucial role in creating codes of conduct, technical regulations, and standards for AI.
